Magic Chocolate Shell

Two ingredients, two steps.

Here’s a dessert trick that looks fancy but takes almost no effort: homemade magic shell! With just two ingredients and two simple steps, you’ll have a rich, chocolatey topping that hardens instantly when it hits cold ice cream.

What makes this recipe especially great is its flexibility—it’s a ratio-based recipe, so you can make a single serving or a big batch, depending on your needs. It’s quick, easy, and a fun way to dress up any bowl of ice cream. Whether you're hosting friends or just treating yourself, this is one of those recipes that feels impressive without actually being much work at all.

Ingredients explained:

  • Chocolate - I use semi sweet chocolate chips, but use whatever chocolate you prefer. It really doesn’t matter as long as you enjoy it!

  • Oil - I use olive oil because I like that earthy more complex flavor that it adds. If you want a neutral flavor, use coconut oil.

The recipe

Magic Chocolate Shell

Ingredients

  • 3 parts chocolate (For 1-2 servings, use 3 Tablespoons, For 6-8 servings, use 3/4 cup)

  • 1 part coconut or olive oil (For 1-2 servings, use 1 Tablespoon, For 6-8 servings, use 1/4 cup)

Directions

  1. In a microwave safe bowl or measuring cup, melt the chocolate in 30 second intervals in the microwave.

  2. Once melted, mix in the oil until incorporated. Serve over ice cream immediately.

It’s ideal to use all of the magic shell right away, but if you have a lot left over, then store covered in the fridge. When ready to use again, microwave in 30 second intervals until runny and whisk to stir together if it has separated.
